Meet the Viking Part 6: The Viking Method – From Personal Recovery to Helping Others Transform
In Part 5 of my story, I shared how finding authentic love with Birgit and embracing my Viking identity led to discovering my true purpose. Now comes the culmination – how The Viking Coaching officially launched and the specific methods I use to help others transform their relationship with stress, chronic conditions, and life transitions. This is about the Viking coaching method and turning personal recovery into professional mission.
The Final Return: Germany and Clarity
After leaving Esther and Martijn’s wedding in July 2024, Birgit and I arrived in Germany together. For the first time in years, I felt like I was moving toward something rather than away from something.
Living with Birgit in Germany gave me the stability and emotional support I needed to finally commit fully to coaching. After years of massage work, teaching, factory jobs, and failed business partnerships, I was ready to build something authentic.
The Viking coaching method wasn’t something I invented from theory – it emerged from 14 years of lived experience with chronic illness, recovery, relationships, career changes, and identity transformation.
The Lisbon Lesson: Authenticity Over Marketing
My final attempt in Lisbon from July 2024 taught me the most important business lesson of all. The marketing company that promised twenty client appointments per month but delivered only two taught me that authentic connection cannot be manufactured.
During those three months, between training sessions about diabetes and client calls that didn’t happen, I had time to reflect on what I really wanted to offer the world.
I wasn’t interested in following someone else’s sales scripts or using manipulative marketing tactics. I wanted to help people the way I wished someone had helped me during my darkest periods – with genuine understanding, practical tools, and respect for their unique journey.
The decision to stop working with that marketing company and go independent wasn’t just a business choice – it was an integrity choice.
The Birth of The Viking Coaching Philosophy
The Viking coaching method is built on four core principles that emerged from my own transformation:
1. Authentic Strength Over Toxic Resilience
Many coaching approaches push people to “push through” or “think positive” in ways that ignore real limitations and struggles. The Viking method recognizes that true strength includes vulnerability, asking for help, and adapting when circumstances change.
Vikings were survivors not because they were invulnerable, but because they were adaptable. They built communities, shared resources, and changed strategies when conditions demanded it.
2. Nervous System First
Whether someone is dealing with chronic illness, relationship stress, career burnout, or general life dissatisfaction, the starting point is always nervous system regulation.
My recovery from fibromyalgia taught me that you cannot think your way out of a dysregulated nervous system. Breathing techniques, cold exposure, movement practices, and stress management form the foundation of all other work.
3. Integration Over Elimination
Rather than trying to eliminate difficult experiences or emotions, the Viking method focuses on integrating them into a stronger, more authentic identity.
My fibromyalgia didn’t disappear – I learned to live with it differently. My divorce wasn’t a failure to overcome – it was necessary growth. My career changes weren’t instability – they were evolution.
4. Purpose Through Service
The ultimate goal isn’t personal happiness or success in traditional terms. It’s discovering how your unique combination of experiences, skills, and insights can serve others.
The Viking method helps people transform their wounds into wisdom and their struggles into strength that benefits their community.
The Specific Techniques I Use
The Viking coaching method combines several evidence-based approaches that I’ve personally tested and refined:
Breathwork and Cold Exposure
Based on the Wim Hof Method that was crucial to my recovery, I teach clients specific breathing techniques for nervous system regulation and introduce cold exposure practices appropriate to their current capacity.
These aren’t just wellness trends – they’re practical tools for building resilience and interrupting stress response patterns that contribute to chronic conditions.
Movement as Medicine
Drawing from my massage therapy background and personal experience with exercise adaptation, I help clients develop movement practices that support rather than deplete their nervous systems.
This isn’t about fitness goals or physical performance – it’s about reconnecting with body wisdom and using movement to process stress and trauma.
Identity Work and Authentic Expression
Using insights from my own identity transformation from patient to Viking, I help clients explore who they are beyond their roles, diagnoses, or others’ expectations.
This might involve literal costume work (like my Viking identity), creative expression, or simply permission to be authentically themselves in daily life.
Stress Management and Lifestyle Design
Based on my experience with multiple major life transitions, I help clients design lifestyles that support their unique needs rather than conforming to external pressures.
This includes everything from career transitions to relationship boundaries to living environment choices.
Community Building and Support Networks
Vikings survived through community cooperation. I help clients identify and build support networks that honor their authentic selves and support their growth.
Real Results with Real People
Since officially launching The Viking Coaching, I’ve worked with clients facing various challenges:
- A corporate executive with chronic fatigue learning to redesign his career around his energy patterns
- A divorced mother discovering her identity beyond caregiving roles
- A retired athlete adapting to life after sports-ending injury
- A chronic pain sufferer developing tools for nervous system regulation
Each client’s journey is unique, but the core process remains consistent: nervous system regulation, authentic identity exploration, practical tool development, and purpose discovery.
The Integration of All My Training
The Viking coaching method integrates everything I’ve learned:
Massage Therapy Training: Understanding how the body holds stress and trauma, knowing when physical intervention is needed alongside emotional work.
Sports Massage Specialization: Knowledge of how movement, recovery, and performance intersect with mental health and life satisfaction.
Teaching Experience: Ability to explain complex concepts simply and adapt to different learning styles.
NLP and Coaching Certification: Structured approaches to behavior change and goal achievement.
Personal Recovery Experience: Lived understanding of chronic illness, relationship challenges, career transitions, and identity transformation.
Cold Exposure and Breathwork Practice: Personal mastery of nervous system regulation techniques.
Why “Viking” Coaching Works
The Viking metaphor resonates with clients because it represents authentic strength rather than performative toughness. Vikings were:
- Adaptable: They survived by changing strategies when conditions demanded it
- Community-oriented: They understood that individual success depended on group support
- Exploratory: They ventured into unknown territories with courage and curiosity
- Resourceful: They used whatever tools were available to solve problems
- Resilient: They recovered from setbacks and learned from defeats
These qualities translate perfectly to modern challenges like chronic illness recovery, career transitions, relationship building, and personal growth.
The Business Philosophy
Running The Viking Coaching as a business requires the same principles I teach clients:
Authentic Marketing: I share my real story, including failures and ongoing challenges, rather than presenting a perfect success narrative.
Sustainable Practices: I maintain my own nervous system regulation practices and don’t overcommit to client work that would compromise my health.
Community Over Competition: I collaborate with other practitioners and refer clients to specialists when appropriate.
Continuous Learning: I remain a student of life, constantly updating my approaches based on new experiences and client feedback.
The Future Vision
The Viking Coaching represents more than a business – it’s a movement toward authentic strength in a world that often promotes surface-level solutions.
My vision includes:
- Online programs for people who can’t access one-on-one coaching
- Workshops combining breathwork, cold exposure, and identity work
- Collaborations with medical professionals who understand holistic approaches
- Training other coaches in Viking method principles
- Continued research into the intersection of nervous system health and life satisfaction
The Student of Life Continues
Even as I help others transform their lives, I remain committed to my own growth. Living with Birgit in Germany, maintaining my relationship with my children across Europe, and building a business that serves others’ authentic growth – all of this requires the same tools I teach clients.
The Viking method isn’t something I’ve mastered – it’s something I practice daily. My morning breathing exercises, regular cold exposure, movement practices, and identity work continue to evolve as I face new challenges and opportunities.
The Full Circle Moment
As I write this final part of my story, I’m struck by how far the journey has traveled. The man who couldn’t lift a coffee cup due to fibromyalgia is now helping others discover their own strength. The patient who felt broken and hopeless is now a guide for others navigating similar challenges.
But perhaps most importantly, the person who spent years being defined by others – as sick, as dependent, as failed husband, as struggling father – has become someone who helps others discover their authentic identity beyond any external labels.
Your Viking Journey Begins
The Viking coaching method isn’t just for people with chronic illness or major life crises. It’s for anyone who suspects there’s more authentic strength, purpose, and joy available to them than they’re currently experiencing.
What sets The Viking Coaching apart is that it’s built on lived experience, not just book knowledge. I choose experience over theory every time. The tools and insights I share come from 14 years of personally testing what works and what doesn’t work in real-life circumstances.
I want to use my experiences to help as many people as possible. Every struggle I’ve faced – from wheelchair dependency to divorce, from career changes to identity transformation – has taught me something valuable that I can now share with others.
Your Viking journey might involve:
- Learning to regulate your nervous system under stress
- Discovering who you are beyond your current roles
- Developing resilience tools for life’s inevitable challenges
- Building authentic community that supports your growth
- Transforming your struggles into service to others
The tools that helped me recover from fibromyalgia, navigate divorce, change careers multiple times, and build authentic relationships are available to you. Not as a magic solution, but as practical approaches you can adapt to your unique circumstances.
